Description: The Shanghumugham beach, a prominent destination of local and foreign tourists shall be one of the most suitable avenue for a museum for contemporary art

Shanghumugham Art Museum, devoted to the promotion of contemporary visual arts, is the first of its kind in the state, as it functions under the auspices of the Municipal Corporation of Thiruvananthapuram. Facing the beautiful Arabian sea, the museum is located at the famous Shanghumugham beach. South Palace (Thekke Kottaram), as it was formerly known as, was originally used as a short-time resting place of erstwhile Tranvancore royal family during the arattu festival held once a year. Since the formation of Indian Republic, it has been under the disposal of the Muncipal Corporation. Now it is converted to art museum with modern facility required for showcasing works of art.
